Sri Lanka to introduce fuel quota

 ■Sri Lanka to introduce guaranteed weekly fuel quota for consumers at filling stations from next month■

            The Sri Lankan government plans to introduce a fuel rationing scheme from next month, under which registered consumers at filling stations would be guaranteed a weekly quota, a senior minister said on Sunday.

The island nation has been experiencing long lines for fuel refilling since mid-February with pressure coming on the diesel supplies for thermal power generation.

By early April, the island was experiencing 10-hour power cuts due to shortages of diesel and furnace oil for power generation.

We have no choice but to register consumers at filling stations and give them a guaranteed weekly quota until we are able to strengthen the financial situation, restore 24 Hour Power and a steady Supply of fuel. I hope to have this system in place by the 1st week of July, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera tweeted on Sunday.

The minister said that the supply of fuel should be managed until there is a round-the-clock 24-hour uninterrupted supply of electricity and fuel.

This paucity has led to reports of stockpiling and hoarding of fuel.

Wijesekera hoped that this measure of imposing a fuel quota would go a long way in addressing the crisis.

With the financial restrictions in place, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation imports fuel to manage for a week, but some consumers stockpile fuel for a month or more for their machinery and generators, he said in another tweet.

He said that 24-hour power supply costs an additional USD 100 million monthly for diesel, furnace oil and naptha.

The shortage in gas supply has increased the demand for electricity and kerosene, and the monthly fuel bill that was USD 200 million four months ago, now stands at USD 550 million, the minister added.

Meanwhile, the last of the fuel shipments due under the Indian Line of Credit are arriving in Sri Lanka later this month, with no indications on the sustenance of future supplies, which are dependent on India's assistance.

We are expecting the last diesel shipment under ILC (Indian Line of Credit) on June 16 and the last petrol shipment on June 22," Wijesekera told reporters on Saturday.

Sri Lanka's fuel purchases have been totally dependent on the ILC -- a USD 500 million credit line initially which was supplemented with another USD 200 million later.

Wijesekera said the minimum daily requirement of diesel was 5,000 metric tonnes as people need it to run private generators due to the power cuts imposed.

India has helped Sri Lanka with thousands of tonnes of diesel and petrol, apart from food and medical supplies, to help ease the acute fuel shortage in the debt-ridden island nation.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas and other fuel, toilet paper and even matches, with citizens for months being forced to wait in lines lasting hours outside stores to buy fuel and cooking gas.

The severe depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US dollar, the soaring global prices of crude due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the depleting gas reserves are the reasons why the country has been struggling to import fuel.

Consequently, spontaneous protests have been reported at filling stations across the country where consumers have been waiting in long serpentine queues for fuel for hours on end.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard

 ●2 members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard die amid tensions●

       Two members of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's aerospace division died as martyrs in Iran in separate incidents over the weekend, Iranian media reported on Monday. The term is typically a designation given to those on important assignments.

The deaths of the two men come as tensions remain high over Iran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers, and its uranium enrichment program that is now closest it has ever been to weapons-grade levels. While authorities offered no suggestion of foul play in the men's deaths, Israel has been accused of killing other high-ranking Guard members amid the growing crisis.

The semiofficial Fars and Tasnim news agencies, believed to be close to the Guard, identified one of the dead as Ali Kamani and said he died in Iran's central city of Khomein. Tasnim said that Kamani died in a car accident, without elaborating.

The news agencies did not give a rank for Kamani. However, a photo published by Tasnim showed the man wearing the epaulets of a second lieutenant in the Guard's aerospace programme, which runs Iran's ballistic missile program as well as some of the country's air defences.

Khomein, the birthplace of the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is in the province of Markazi. That province is also home to Iran's Arak heavy water reactor, a key nuclear program site that has air defences around it.

Fars alone reported on the death of the second man, whom it identified as Mohammad Abdous. The agency published a picture of Abdous in civilian clothes at the Imam Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad, Iran.

Fars said that Abdous died on a mission while working in Iran's Semnan province. Rural Semnan province, east of Tehran, is home to the Imam Khomeini Spaceport, which has been used in satellite launches.

The report of the two men's deaths come about a week and half after the reported death of Guard Col. Ali Esmailzadeh, a member of its expeditionary Quds Force, under unclear circumstances.

In May, two gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed Guard Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei in Tehran. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack. Iranian officials have blamed global arrogance code for the United States and Israel for Khodaei's killing.

The 50-year-old Khodaei remains a shadowy figure and Iran has yet to offer biographic detail beyond saying that he also was a member of the elite Quds Force. The Guard has described him as defender of the shrine a reference to Iranians who support militias fighting the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. Thousands attended his funeral in Tehran and hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi visited his family.

The manner of the slaying evoked previous targeted attacks by Israel in Iran. In November 2020, a top Iranian military nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was killed by a remote-controlled machine gun while travelling in a car outside Tehran.

 ●कुवैत सरकार का पैगंबर पर टिप्पणियों को लेकर प्रदर्शन करने वाले प्रवासियों को निष्कासित करने का फैसला●

                कुवैत सरकार ने भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) के दो पदाधिकारियों द्वारा पैगंबर मोहम्मद के खिलाफ की गयी विवादित टिप्पणियों के विरोध में एक प्रदर्शन में भाग लेने वाले प्रवासियों को गिरफ्तार करने तथा उन्हें निष्कासित करने का फैसला किया है। खाड़ी देश के कानूनों में ऐसे प्रदर्शनों की अनुमति नहीं है।

सऊदी अरब में अंग्रेजी भाषा के दैनिक अखबार ‘अरब न्यूज’ में प्रकाशित एक खबर में सूत्रों के हवाले से कहा गया है कि शुक्रवार की नमाज के बाद फाहाहील इलाके से पैगंबर मोहम्मद के समर्थन में प्रदर्शन करने वाले प्रवासियों को गिरफ्तार करने का निर्देश दिया गया है। देश के कानूनों के अनुसार खाड़ी देश में प्रवासियों द्वारा धरना या प्रदर्शन करने की मनाही है।

कुवैती अखबार अल राई ने खबर दी है, ‘‘अधिकारी उन्हें गिरफ्तार करने तथा उनके देश वापस भेजने के लिए निर्वासन केंद्र ले जाने की प्रक्रिया में हैं और उनके फिर से कुवैत आने की अनुमति नहीं होगी।’’

खबर में प्रदर्शन में भाग लेने वाले प्रवासियों की नागरिकता का जिक्र नहीं है।

कुवैत सरकार उन कुछ देशों में से एक है जिसने पूर्व भाजपा पदाधिकारी की टिप्पणियों को लेकर भारतीय दूत को समन भेजा था।

कुवैत के विदेश मंत्रालय ने कहा कि कुवैत में भारत के राजदूत सिबी जॉर्ज को सम्मन भेजा गया और एशिया मामलों के सहायक विदेश मंत्री ने उन्हें एक आधिकारिक विरोध पत्र सौंपा।

मंत्रालय ने भारत की सत्तारूढ़ पार्टी द्वारा जारी बयान का स्वागत किया, जिसमें उसने नेताओं को निलंबित करने की घोषणा की।

गौरतलब है कि कई मुस्लिम देशों ने पूर्व भाजपा पदाधिकारी की विवादित टिप्पणियों की निंदा की है।

आधिकारिक आंकड़ों के मुताबिक, कुवैत में कानूनी रूप से रह रहे भारतीय नागरिकों की संख्या 2019 में 10 लाख से ऊपर हो गई थी। कुवैत में हर साल भारतीय समुदाय के लोगों की संख्या में पांच-छह प्रतिशत की वृद्धि हो रही है।

 ●Tata Steel unveils green investment plan for UK steel tube mill●

        Tata Steel has unveiled a 7-million pound investment plan for its Hartlepool Tube Mill in north-east England that the Indian steel major says will cut carbon emissions, improve capacity and reduce costs to strengthen its UK business.

The investment will go into a new slitter which will allow the Hartlepool site to process coils of steel delivered from Tata's Port Talbot steelmaking site in South Wales. All of the steel products made at the site, where almost 300 people work producing up to 200,000 tonnes of steel tubes a year, are 100 per cent recyclable and the investment is forecast to pay for itself in less than three years.

This project will allow us to bring a vital process on site, which in turn will free up thousands of tonnes of capacity at the Port Talbot site, Andrew Ward, Works Manager of Tata Steel in Hartlepool, said last week.

This will improve our efficiency and reduce overall CO2 emissions from our steel processing as well as reducing the total costs across the business, he said.

Currently, wide steel slabs are slit in Port Talbot before being rolled and sent to Hartlepool to be turned into steel tubes, which are then used in a wide range of products such as agricultural machinery, sports stadiums, steel-framed buildings and the energy sector.

The new project is expected to take more than a year to complete and is the second major investment announced by the Indian company in the UK this year after an investment plan for its site at Corby in the north-eastern England region. Both projects will further strengthen the UK business, improving services to customers and using the latest available technology to reduce environmental emissions, Tata Steel UK said.

Andrew Ward added: Above all, safety will be a key factor in this investment both during the construction phase and when the new slitter is up and running. It will feature the latest computer-controlled technology, which reduces the need for our employees to be close to any hazardous operations and it will be as energy-efficient as possible.

The new slitter line will optimise the UK value chain for our smaller tube product range, allowing steel coil to flow through the chain and provide flexibility with on-site slitting . This investment will support the ongoing drive to improve customer delivery performance and responsiveness which the Hartlepool 20 Mill team pride themselves upon.

Tata Steel in the UK says it has the ambition to produce net-zero steel by 2050 at the latest and to have reduced 30 per cent of CO2 emissions by 2030. The vast majority of that work will need to happen in South Wales, where the company's largest operational site is.

Tata Steel says it is developing detailed plans for this transition to future steelmaking based on low CO2 technologies and is close to knowing which will best help achieve its ambitions.

The steel giant is one of Europe's leading steel producers, with steelmaking in the Netherlands and the UK, and manufacturing plants across Europe. The company's tube products are used across a broad range of industries, including construction, machinery fabrication, energy and automotive. Next week, the company will be at the Wire and Tube 2022 fair in Dusseldorf, Germany, after a long gap due to the coronavirus pandemic.

राहुल से ईडी की पूछताछ

 ●धनशोधन मामले में राहुल गांधी से ईडी की पूछताछ●

         कांग्रेस के पूर्व अध्यक्ष राहुल गांधी ‘नेशनल हेराल्ड’ से जुड़े कथित धनशोधन मामले में सोमवार को प्रवर्तन निदेशालय (ईडी) के समक्ष पेश हुए और जांच एजेंसी द्वारा उनसे पूछताछ जारी है।

अधिकारियों ने बताया कि राहुल गांधी सुबह करीब 11.10 बजे एपेजी अब्दुल कलाम रोड स्थित ईडी के मुख्यालय पहुंचे और संभावना है कि वह अपना बयान लिखित रूप से दें।

राहुल गांधी कांग्रेस मुख्यालय से ईडी दफ्तर पहुंचे। इस मौके पर राजस्थान के मुख्यमंत्री अशोक गहलोत, छत्तीसगढ़ के मुख्यमंत्री भूपेश बघेल, पार्टी महासचिव प्रियंका गांधी वाद्रा समेत कांग्रेस के कई वरिष्ठ नेता और बड़ी संख्या में कार्यकर्ता पहुंचे और राहुल गांधी के प्रति अपना समर्थन जताया।

राहुल गांधी का काफिला जब ईडी मुख्यालय पहुंचा तो गाड़ी में उनके बगल में प्रियंका गांधी भी बैठी हुईं थीं।

एजेंसी धन शोधन रोकथाम अधिनियम (पीएमएलए) की आपराधिक धाराओं के तहत राहुल गांधी का बयान दर्ज करेगी।

अधिकारियों के अनुसार, कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेताओं और गांधी परिवार से पूछताछ ईडी की जांच का हिस्सा है ताकि ‘यंग इंडियन’ और ‘एसोसिएटेड जर्नल्स लिमिटेड’ (एजेएल) के हिस्सेदारी पैटर्न, वित्तीय लेनदेन और प्रवर्तकों की भूमिका को समझा जा सके। ‘यंग इंडियन’ के प्रवर्तकों और शेयरधारकों में सोनिया गांधी तथा राहुल गांधी सहित कांग्रेस के कुछ अन्य सदस्य शामिल हैं।

राहुल गांधी से ‘यंग इंडिया’ की स्थापना, ‘नेशनल हेराल्ड’ के संचालन और धन के कथित हस्तांतरण को लेकर सवाल किए जा सकते हैं।

कांग्रेस ने राहुल गांधी की पेशी के मद्देनजर देश भर में ईडी कार्यालयों के बाहर ‘सत्याग्रह’ का फैसला किया था और दिल्ली में भी बड़े पैमाने पर शक्ति प्रदर्शन की तैयारी कर रखी थी।

कांग्रेस के यहां प्रस्तावित मार्च के मद्देनजर पुलिस ने कांग्रेस के कई कार्यकर्ताओं को हिरासत में ले लिया और पार्टी मुख्यालय के आसपास धारा 144 लगा दी।

मुख्य विपक्षी दल के मुख्य प्रवक्ता रणदीप सुरजेवाला ने ईडी को भाजपा का ‘इलेक्शन मैनेजमेंट डिमार्टमेंट’ करार दिया और आरोप लगाया कि नरेंद्र मोदी सरकार ने कांग्रेस के ‘सत्याग्रह’ को रोकने के लिए नयी दिल्ली के इलाके में अघोषित आपातकाल लगा दिया है।

ईडी ने इससे पहले राहुल गांधी को दो जून को पेश होने के लिये कहा था, लेकिन उन्होंने पेश होने के लिए कोई दूसरी तारीख देने का अनुरोध करते हुए कहा था कि वह देश से बाहर हैं।

जांच एजेंसी ने इसी मामले में कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी को 23 जून को तलब किया है। पहले उन्हें आठ जून को पेश होने के लिए नोटिस दिया गया था। हालांकि कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष ने पेश होने के लिए और समय मांगा था क्योंकि वह कोरोना वायरस से संक्रमित हैं तथा अब तक स्वस्थ नहीं हुई हैं।

कांग्रेस का कहना है कि उसके शीर्ष नेताओं के खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोप निराधार हैं तथा ईडी की कार्रवाई प्रतिशोध की राजनीति के तहत की जा रही है। उसने यह भी कहा है कि वह एवं उसका नेतृत्व झुकने वाले नहीं है।

पार्टी के मुख्य प्रवक्ता सुरजेवाला ने कांग्रेस के शीर्ष नेताओं के खिलाफ लगे आरोपों को निराधार करार देते हुए कहा, ‘‘कांग्रेस एक राजनीतिक दल है और एक राजनीतिक दल किसी कंपनी में हिस्सेदारी नहीं खरीद सकता। इसलिए, ‘यंग इंडियन’ के नाम से एक गैर-लाभकारी कंपनी (नॉट फॉर प्रॉफिट कंपनी) को ‘नेशनल हेराल्ड’ एवं एसोसिएटेड जर्नल्स लिमिटेड के शेयर दिए गए, ताकि 90 करोड़ रुपये का कर्ज खत्म हो सके।’’

उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘इस 90 करोड़ रुपये में से 67 करोड़ रुपये कर्मचारियों के वेतन एवं वीआरएस के लिए दिए गए तथा बाकी सरकार का बकाया, बिजली के बिल तथा भवन के लिए भुगतान हुआ। यह अपराध कैसे हो सकता है? यह तो कर्तव्य का बोध है। हमने मोदी सरकार की तरह देश की संपत्ति अपने उद्योगपति मित्रों को नहीं बेच डाली।’’

सुरजेवाला के अनुसार, ‘नेशनल हेराल्ड’ के स्वामित्व वाले एसोसिएटेड जर्नल्स लिमिटेड के पास आज भी सारी संपत्ति हूबहू सुरक्षित है।

 ●100 terrorists killed in Kashmir in 2022 so far●

      Security forces have killed 100 terrorists in Kashmir during counter insurgency operations since the beginning of this year with Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit bearing the maximum brunt as it lost 63 cadres, officials said here on Monday.

"Security forces have eliminated 100 terrorists, including 29 foreigners, since the beginning of this year in Kashmir," the officials said.

They said this was double the number of ultras killed during the corresponding period last year.

"Fifty terrorists including one foreigner were killed in the counter terrorism operations last year in the first five months and 12 days," the officials said.

While 63 of the slain terrorists belonged to banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, 24 others were affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), they said.

कर्नाटक: शिलालेख

 ●बैंदुर में 15वीं सदी का शिलालेख पाया गया●

        कर्नाटक के उडुपी जिले के बैंदुर तालुक में नंदनवन गांव में 15वीं सदी के विजयनगर साम्राज्य का शिलालेख बरामद किया गया है। एक बयान में इसकी जानकारी दी गयी है ।

एक विज्ञप्ति में यहां कहा गया है कि सेंट एलॉयसियस कॉलेज के निदेशक श्रुथेश आचार्य ने सेवानिवृत्त शिक्षक के. श्रीधर भट और ओरिएंटल अभिलेखागार अनुसंधान केंद्र के निदेशक प्रोफेसर एस ए कृष्णैया के मार्गदर्शन में शिलालेख का अध्ययन किया।

यह शिलालेख संजीव प्रभु नाम के व्यक्ति की जमीन पर पाया गया और काना पत्थर में खुदा हुआ था। पांच फुट लंबे और 2.5 फुट चौड़े शिलालेख में कन्नड़ भाषा में 38 पंक्तियां लिखी हुई है।

शीर्ष छोर पर बने वामन प्रतिमा के दोनों ओर शंख, चक्र, सूर्य और चंद्रमा गुदा हुआ है। इसमें ‘स्वस्ति श्री गणाधिपताये नम:’ शीर्षक लिखा है और तारीख 21 अगस्त, 1519 ईसवी की है।

शिलालेख पर तारीख स्पष्ट रूप से दर्शाती है कि यह विजयनगर साम्राज्य के तुलुवा शासक कृष्णदेवराया के वक्त का है। इस काल के दौरान बाराकूरा प्रांत पर रत्नप्पा ओडेया के बेटे विजयप्पा ओडेया का शासन था।
